Workshop: State Preemption of Local Authority

Across America, new municipal and county health, safety, labor and environmental ordinances are the focus of a growing trend: they are being overruled – or “preempted” – by state legislation.

As a local official or advocate, the increased use of state preemption directly affects your community and work.

That’s why SEIU, the Rockefeller Family Fund, and the Mayors Innovation Project held the daylong workshop on November 18th in Austin, Texas. The workshop was directly before the National League of Cities Conference in Austin.

This workshop included elected officials and advocates working across a wide range of issues including minimum wage, earned sick time, food labeling, fracking and more.
