From Seed to Root: Early-State Strategies for Community Wealth Building

Cities are increasingly aware of the growing wealth gap and its often devastating impacts for low-income people in their communities. Cities can help close this gap through the democratization of their development processes. By centering the voices and needs of working class people and people of color, cities can better assess whether and how a development will benefit the community.

Our latest report, From Seed to Root, profiles early stage economic development projects in three cities that show promise for creating community wealth: Nashville, TN; Detroit, MI; and Lafayette, LA.

We take a close look at some of the challenges, opportunities, and partnerships that these cities have encountered in their efforts to support more equitable economic growth. We also offer some recommendations for how you can build community wealth in your city.
